I actually participated in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and walked with the athletes in the Parade of Champions. One year, I was especially touched when a team allowed me to hold their banner for them during the ceremony. During events, I kept time and score, helped to organize the events, and worked the registration table. I also had the pleasure of chaperoning the Closing Dance one year, which was one of my favorite experiences because the people were all so fun and full of life. Volunteering with the Special Olympics definitely was one of my favorite volunteer experiences during my undergraduate career.
Habitat for Humanity
Since 2010, I volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity organization, an organization where local members of the community come together to build a house for a needy family in the area. Working with this organization allowed me to meet many different people and improved my ability to work as a member of a large group. As an added bonus, I learned how to properly use a hammer!
